Information Literacy?

  • It simply means the ability to identify what information is needed , to understand how information is organized and to identify the sources available and using the information ethically.
  • Its so important for every students to get knowledge  on this because as we are in the modern world  the use of information technology is increasing day by day.Its by getting a knowledge on Information Literacy we can face challenges.

Then we learned  about the problems that is faced due to the lack of information skills. This might be a great loss for the ones who are not trained under the Information Skills. The major problem will be in  our  society  is they will find wrong information what is available and  mislead the information.

overall In secession 1 we got a brief idea on what is Information literacy.

started with the Information Literacy process .Information Literacy process is a structural plan for solving the problems. It is a program where the learner should find , understand and train and make up himself by searching various Information in order to create a personal , social or global purposes. The Information Literacy process shows us the BIG SIX stage process .

The BIG SIX process helps us to solve problems and make correct decisions  by using this Information .

  - Big 6 process model -

  1. Task Definition
  2. Information Seeking Behavior
  3. Location and Access
  4. Use of Information
  5. Synthesis
  6. Evaluation

We came to know the advantages and disadvantages of using classification schemes.

    Library Catalog
In this section we leaned about how to use the library Catalog & internet search engines.

    Search Tools

    Information Retrieval Systems

    Library Catalog

In this section we got to know how to use the library Catalog of AIU Library. We can find out the books, audiovisuals, and periodicals that can be found in the AIU library by visiting the on-line Catalog. AIU System Libraries use a web-based called OPAC (On-line Public Access Catalog).

It serves as the focal search point for the library contents. Based on search criteria of author, subject or title, the retrieval or hit list screen will display attributes such as publisher, date of publication, call number and availability.

    Types of Searching

    • Browse Searching
    • Keyword Searching
    • Reserve: a reserve item (an item that the instructor has set aside for use by his or hes students only)
    • Expert Search

    Internet

Internet is an electronic network that connect personal computers and organizational computer/other around the world. The internet is available to anyone with computer, connection and internet service provider. Internet is also called as Information Superhighway.

    1) Search Engines
Eg: Google, Alta Vista, Ask.com, Bing, etc....
    2) Meta-search Engines
Eg: Meta Crawler, Dog pile ,Excite, etc.....

Eg:  INFORMINE, The internet Public Library, etc.....
    5) Specialized Database
Eg: Bibliographic Database, Google Scholar, Commercial Database, etc.....

    Specialised Databases

This is also known as "invisible web" its so called because it is out of the reach of the “spiders” and their search tools. It includes statistics,schedules,maps,figures..Although they are invisible they can be found in most search engine results.

    SEARCH STRATEGIES

In week 5 we learned about strategies to search a word or a thing. I already talk about search tools, I hope you still remember but today I will let you know about search strategies. How we are going to find the right information and it has a quality. That is in short we got to know which cases we should use keywords, subject headings, phrases and single words.Single words are main points to learn in search strategies basic.

    • Keywords- These usually gives us more resources,a broader search
    • Subject Headings- A standardized vocabulary, usually gives a specific resources

    Boolean Searching
    - This refers to the combining terms such as AND,OR and NOT used in building
a search statement or in putting several sets together.Found by George Boole
      (1815-1864)
This is the way of displaying the results for OR,NOT and AND

Boolean Searching is a combining term such as AND, OR. NOT used in building a search or statement or in putting a several set together. It known as the most common and basic search strategies
      - By sing AND between word you limit the search
      - By using OR between word it expand the search
      - By using Not between word it exclude word from the search

      Truncation and Wildcard

Truncation expand the search to locate all word begin with the same root and they are normally end with the same root word.
Example :  teen* will give you the information about teen, teens, teenage or teenager.

Wildcard is a special character, such as asterisk (*), question mark (?) or pound sign (#) that replace one or more letter in the word. It usually represent a single character. It uses in the middle of word to match usually known variants of a term
Example : wom?n will return woman, women and womyn

      Introduction oCitation

This week was hardest week of all we have learnt so far. At first I was so confused of this lesson. latter on it was little OK. This week is the about Citation and documenting information sources. I have learned so many things for this week. I learned the basic of APA Styles. I came to know how to write a Bibliography/reference.It was so hard for me to understand the format.I came to know what is Plagiarism.

                           APA Format...

Learn what APA style is and why it is so important
Learn about the standard APA title page format
Learn basic documentation for books, journals, and websites
Learn the differences between methods of source integration: summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting
Learn how to use signal phrases and in-text citation to avoid plagiarism

Why shout we learn about citation?
It is because to tell  our readers that certain material in our work came from another source. It also gives our readers the information necessary to find that source again, the important thing is work without plagiarizing. Whenever we borrow words or ideas, we need to acknowledge their source. In the citation including the information about:

      • information about the author
      • the title of the work
      • the name and location of the company that published your copy of the source
      • the date your copy was published
      • the page numbers of the material you are borrowing

      What is APA style?
It is American Psychological Association. It show the format of how to write the references in the right way.

Below are the example of format :

APA  Style citation for book more than first edition

Author. (Year). Title of book (Edition.). Place of Publication : Publisher.

APA Style citation for edited Book
Editor. (Ed./Eds.). (Year). Title. Place of  publication : Publisher.

APA Style citation for Corporate bodies as authour
Corporate author. (Year). Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher.

APA Style citation for edited book
Editor. (Ed./Eds.). (Year). Title. Place of publication :Publisher.

APA Style citation for Journal Article

Writer of the article.(Year).Title of the article.Title of the Journal, Volume(issue/no.), page.

APA Style citation for Article for Internet
Author. (Year). Title of the article. Retrieved month date, year from URL address.

      APA Style citation for Dictionary

Editor.(Ed.).(Year).Name of Dictionary (Edition,Volumes).Place publication:      Publisher

I had already shown  you the way how to write the APA style format. So From now on I hope that no more copy& paste only.Besides as a good learner must not plagiarist. The lecture was so speed but I still could catch a few words. The lesson was not too easy or too difficult for me.I had a hard time to catchup the lesson. Miss Asna a Small Request Me and my Friends couldn't understand much in this lesson can you please teach us again.
